Fr. George V. Coyne, S. J., Director of the Vatican Observatory from 1978 to 2006, writes that science is seen by the Church as a partner in dialogue. Although the encyclical Fides et Ratio is only indirectly concerned with the natural sciences, it welcomes further dialogue on the partnership of the sciences with philosophy and theology in the search for ultimate meaning, the true focus of the encyclical.

A version of this essay also appears within Coyne’s larger article “Today’s Playing Field: Theology and Science” in the book God’s Action in Nature’s World: Essays in Honour of Robert John Russell (Routledge, 2016).
