SUMMARY:James Dewar\, died 1923
DESCRIPTION:Sir James Dewar FRS FRSE (20 September 1842 – 27 March 1923) was a British chemist and physicist. He is best known for his invention of the vacuum flask\, which he used in conjunction with research into the liquefaction of gases. He also studied atomic and molecular spectroscopy\, working in these fields for more than 25 years. – Wikipedia

SUMMARY:Val Logsdon Fitch\, born 1923
DESCRIPTION:Val Logsdon Fitch (March 10\, 1923 – February 5\, 2015) was an American nuclear physicist who\, with co-researcher James Cronin\, was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for a 1964 experiment using the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory that proved that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles. Specifically\, they proved\, by examining the decay of K-mesons\, that a reaction run in reverse does not retrace the path of the original reaction\, which showed that the reactions of subatomic particles are not indifferent to time. Thus the phenomenon of CP violation was discovered. This demolished the faith that physicists had that natural laws were governed by symmetry. \nBorn on a cattle ranch near Merriman\, Nebraska\, Fitch was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II\, and worked on the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico. He later graduated from McGill University\, and completed his PhD in physics in 1954 at Columbia University. He was a member of the faculty at Princeton University from 1954 until his retirement in 2005. – Wikipedia

SUMMARY:Fr. Eusebio Kino SJ\, died 1711
DESCRIPTION:Eusebio Francisco Kino\, SJ (Italian: Eusebio Francesco Chini\, Spanish: Eusebio Francisco Kino; 10 August 1645 – 15 March 1711)\, often referred to as Father Kino\, was a Tyrolean Jesuit\, missionary\, geographer\, explorer\, cartographer and astronomer born in the Territory of the Bishopric of Trent\, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. For the last 24 years of his life he worked in the region then known as the Pimería Alta\, modern-day Sonora in Mexico and southern Arizona in the United States. He explored the region and worked with the indigenous Native American population\, including primarily the Tohono O’Odham\, Sobaipuri and other Upper Piman groups. He proved that the Baja California Territory was not an island but a peninsula by leading an overland expedition there. By the time of his death he had established 24 missions and visitas (country chapels or visiting stations). – Wikipedia \nMore pictures and description of this remarkable Jesuit can be found at:\nhttps://www.jesuits.global/2020/07/15/padre-kino-the-missionary-on-horseback-recognized-by-the-universal-church/

SUMMARY:St. Patrick’s Day (Ireland)
DESCRIPTION:Saint Patrick’s Day\, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig\, lit. ‘the Day of the Festival of Patrick’)\, is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March\, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461)\, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. \nSaint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church\, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland)\, the Eastern Orthodox Church\, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland\, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals\, céilithe\, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day\, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption. – Wikipedia

SUMMARY:St. Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Saint Joseph’s Day\, also called the Feast of Saint Joseph or the Solemnity of Saint Joseph\, is in Western Christianity the principal feast day of Saint Joseph\, husband of the Virgin Mary and legal father of Jesus Christ\, celebrated on 19 March. It has the rank of a solemnity in the Catholic Church. It is a feast or commemoration in the provinces of the Anglican Communion\,[1] and a feast or festival in the Lutheran Church. Saint Joseph’s Day is the Patronal Feast day for Poland as well as for Canada\, persons named Joseph\, Josephine\, etc.\, for religious institutes\, schools and parishes bearing his name\, and for carpenters. It is also Father’s Day in some Catholic countries\, mainly Spain\, Portugal\, and Italy. It is not a holy day of obligation for Catholics in the United States. – Wikipedia

SUMMARY:New Moon
DESCRIPTION:New Moon. By the modern definition\, New Moon occurs when the Moon and Sun are at the same geocentric ecliptic longitude. The part of the Moon facing us is completely in shadow then. Pictured here is the traditional New Moon\, the earliest visible waxing crescent\, which signals the start of a new month in many lunar and lunisolar calendars.

SUMMARY:World Meteorological Day
DESCRIPTION:The World Meteorological Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations\, based in Geneva. It “is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere\, its interaction with the land and oceans\, the weather and climate it produces\, and the resulting distribution of water resources.” \nThe World Meteorological Day is celebrated annually since 1961. This year’s theme is “Climate & Water.” \n“Fresh water is vital for life. On average\, a human being cannot survive more than three days without it. Water is essential for the production of our food\, virtually all of our goods and services and for the environment. \n“The world now faces increasing challenges posed by water stress\, floods and droughts and lack of access to clean supplies. There is an urgent need to improve forecasting\, monitoring and management of water supplies and to tackle the problem of too much\, too little or too polluted water.” \nhttps://worldmetday.wmo.int/en

SUMMARY:Christopher Clavius SJ\, born 1538
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Clavius\, SJ (25 March 1538 – 6 February 1612[1]) was a Jesuit German mathematician\, head of mathematicians at the Collegio Romano\, and astronomer who was a member of the Vatican commission that accepted the proposed calendar invented by Aloysius Lilius\, that is known as the Gregorian calendar. Clavius would later write defences and an explanation of the reformed calendar\, including an emphatic acknowledgement of Lilius’ work. In his last years he was probably the most respected astronomer in Europe and his textbooks were used for astronomical education for over fifty years in and even out of Europe. – Wikipedia

DESCRIPTION:Tullio Levi-Civita\, ForMemRS (English: /ˈtʊlioʊ ˈlɛvi ˈtʃɪvɪtə/\, Italian: [ˈtulljo ˈlɛːvi ˈtʃiːvita]; 29 March 1873 – 29 December 1941) was an Italian mathematician\, most famous for his work on absolute differential calculus (tensor calculus) and its applications to the theory of relativity\, but who also made significant contributions in other areas. He was a pupil of Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro\, the inventor of tensor calculus. His work included foundational papers in both pure and applied mathematics\, celestial mechanics (notably on the three-body problem)\, analytic mechanics (the Levi-Civita separability conditions in the Hamilton–Jacobi equation) and hydrodynamics. – Wikipedia
