SUMMARY:New Moon
DESCRIPTION:New Moon. By the modern definition\, New Moon occurs when the Moon and Sun are at the same geocentric ecliptic longitude. The part of the Moon facing us is completely in shadow then. Pictured here is the traditional New Moon\, the earliest visible waxing crescent\, which signals the start of a new month in many lunar and lunisolar calendars.

SUMMARY:J. A. Fleming died\, 1945 (b. 1849).
DESCRIPTION:Illustration from the Bibliographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society\, 1945. The Royal Society\, London.\nSir John Ambrose Fleming FRS died in 1945\, aged 95 (born 29 November 1849). “He was an English electrical engineer and physicist who invented the first thermionic valve or vacuum tube\, designed the radio transmitter with which the first transatlantic radio transmission was made\, and also established the right-hand rule used in physics. He was the eldest of seven children of James Fleming DD (died 1879)\, a Congregational minister\, and his wife Mary Ann\, at Lancaster\, Lancashire\, and baptised on 11 February 1850. A devout Christian\, he once preached at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London on evidence for the resurrection. In 1932\, he and Douglas Dewar and Bernard Acworth helped establish the Evolution Protest Movement. Fleming bequeathed much of his estate to Christian charities\, especially those for the poor. He was a noted photographer\, painted watercolors\, and enjoyed climbing the Alps.” – Wikipedia \nIn Fleming’s obituary\, W H Eccles FRS\, wrote\, “As the years passed he [Fleming] became very deaf\, but he continued his lecture work and still charmed great audiences and stimulated students. It is thought he could utilize his deafness as a defense when he wished to ignore advice; at any rate his hearing varied whimsically. This deafness seems to have been a family trouble\, for his sister\, who now and then visited him at the [University] College [London]\, was also deaf. Their conversation penetrated to other parts of the department and involuntary auditors would occasionally hear the lady telling her brother not to be so cantankerous.”

SUMMARY:International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:An explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union\, now the territories of Belarus\, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation. \nThe Soviet Government acknowledged the need for international assistance only in 1990. That same year the General Assembly adopted resolution 45/190\, calling for “international cooperation to address and mitigate the consequences at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.” That was the start of the United Nations’ involvement in the Chernobyl recovery. An Inter-Agency Task Force was established to coordinate the Chernobyl co-operation. In 1991 the UN created the Chernobyl Trust Fund – currently under the management of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Since 1986\, the UN family of organizations and major NGOs have launched more than 230 different research and assistance projects in the fields of health\, nuclear safety\, rehabilitation\, environment\, production of clean foods and information. \nIn 2002 the United Nations announced a shift in the Chernobyl strategy\, with a new focus on a long-term developmental approach. UNDP and its regional offices in the three affected countries took the lead in the implementation of the new strategy. There is still a great deal of work that needs to be done in the affected region. To provide support to international\, national and public programmes targeted at the sustainable development of these territories\, in 2009 UN launched the International Chernobyl Research and Information Network (ICRIN). \nOn 8 December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 26 April as International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. In its resolution\, the General Assembly recognized that three decades after the disaster there remains persistent serious long-term consequences and that the affected communities and territories are experiencing continuing related needs. The General Assembly invites all Member States\, relevant agencies of the United Nations system and other international organizations\, as well as civil society\, to observe the day. – un.org

SUMMARY:World Day for Safety and Health at Work
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the great challenge that governments\, employers\, workers and whole societies are facing worldwide to combat the COVID-19 pandemic\, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will focus on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work\, in particular\, on the COVID-19 pandemic. \nConcern is growing over the continuing rise in COVID-19 infections in some parts of the world and the ability to sustain declining rates in others. Governments\, employers\, workers and their organizations face enormous challenges as they try to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and protect safety and health at work. Beyond the immediate crisis\, there are also concerns about resuming activity in a manner that sustains progress made in suppressing transmission. \nThe World Day for Safety and Health at Work will aim to stimulate national tripartite dialogue on safety and health at work. The ILO is using this day to raise awareness on the adoption of safe practices in workplaces and the role that occupational safety and health (OSH) services play. It will also focus on the medium to long-term\, including recovery and future preparedness\, in particular\, integrating measures into OSH management systems and policies at the national and enterprise levels. – un.org \n \n  \nWebsite: https://www.un.org/en/observances/work-safety-day
