This article, published in The Space Review in 2025, is an in-depth discussion of science and Young Earth Creationism as seen by anthropologist Deana L. Weibel, who attended an “Astronaut Encounter” event at the Ark Encounter theme park. The astronauts who spoke at the event were Charlie Duke of Apollo 16, Jeffrey N. Williams, and Barry Wilmore (noted for having recently been stranded aboard the International Space Station when the Boeing Starliner capsule malfunctioned). All were Young Earth Creationists.
Weibel studies religion and (space) science. She spent a month conducting ethnographic fieldwork at the Vatican Observatory (that work is discussed in the article).
