Our tradition of hosting online meetups with our Sacred Space Astronomy members and the Vatican Observatory staff, scholars and friends during the Full Moon in Tucson (or thereabout) continues on December 4, 2025 at 10:00 AM Tucson time (Mountain Standard Time time), 12:00 Noon Eastern Daylight time, or 17:00 UTC.
This meetup is a perk for our Sacred Space Astronomy subscribers- you get to chat with each other, and astronomers and scientists from the Vatican Observatory!
We’ll also have the latest astronomy news and an update about the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope1.

Richard Green is an Emeritus Astronomer at Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. During his career, he served as Deputy Director of the US National Optical Observatory (now NOIRLab), Director of Kitt Peak National Observatory, Director of the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory on Mt. Graham, and Director of UKIRT Observatory in Hawaii.
He recently served a term as Division Director for Astronomical Sciences at the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC. He currently serves as the co-lead for the American Astronomical Society Policy Group for satellite constellations, Chair of an international Focus Group on satellite constellations to inform UN policy, and Chair of an International Astronomical Union Working Group on Astronomy on the Moon.
Richard’s main research interest is in the area of active galaxies and quasars, but he’s also an award-winning dark sky advocate! He was awarded the Crawford/Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award by DarkSky International in 2024 for his extraordinary lifetime commitment to light pollution abatement, exemplified by his leadership roles in prominent astronomical organizations, advocacy for dark-sky legislation in Arizona, and dedication to fostering global awareness of dark skies through his work with the International Astronomical Union. His extensive contributions have significantly advanced the mission of protecting the night sky for future generations.
