Today, students in Earth & Space Science and Aerospace Engineering classes were treated to a powerful and thought-provoking presentation by Mr. Rob Lorenz, a Jesuit seminarian currently completing his regency—a period of active ministry between studies—while working with the Vatican Observatory in Tucson, Arizona.
The Vatican Observatory, one of the oldest astronomical institutions in the world, is a collaboration with the University of Arizona and showcases the Church’s long-standing commitment to scientific exploration. Mr. Lorenz captivated our students by highlighting the harmony between faith and science—drawing inspiration from St. John Paul II, who once wrote:
“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.”
Mr. Lorenz explained how our faith tells us God created us because he loves us, while science helps us understand how the universe came to be. He reminded students that since God is the Creator of all things, exploring the universe is one way to grow closer to Him.
We’re grateful for Mr. Lorenz’s visit and his witness to the beauty of the Church’s intellectual tradition. CovCath is praying for him as he continues his journey toward the priesthood and his mission of bringing faith and science together.
