Maximilian Hell, S.J., born 1720 (d. 1792).

Jesuit priest, first director of the Vienna Observatory most famous for his observation of the transit of Venus in 1769 in the northernmost Norway.

His 300th birthday celebration planned in his birthplace (which is, incidentally, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) this year had to be cancelled due to COVID19. But the organizers promise that the celebration of Hell’s 301st birthday in 2021 will be all the more festive.
