World Meteorological Day.

  • This event has passed.

The World Meteorological Organization turns 71 today. The WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, based in Geneva. It “is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it produces, and the resulting distribution of water resources.” (https://public.wmo.int/en/our-mandate/what-we-do)
The World Meteorological Day is celebrated annually since 1961. This year’s theme is “The ocean, our climate and weather.”
“When it comes to the weather and climate, most of us think only about what is happening in the atmosphere. If we ignore the ocean, however, we miss a big piece of the picture.
“The World Meteorological Day theme – The ocean, our climate and weather – celebrates WMO’s focus in connecting the ocean, climate and weather within the Earth System. It also  marks the launch of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The Decade galvanizes efforts to gather ocean science – through innovative and transformative ideas  – as the basis of information to support sustainable development.”
