“A fast coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the Sun the evening of 8 October, 2024, and is likely to arrive at Earth on 10 October. This CME has been analyzed and speed estimates are 1200 to 1300 km/s. This makes for a potential arrival time as early as the morning to midday of 10 October EDT. There is potential to reach G4 (Severe) upon arrival of this CME and throughout its passage. We won’t know the characteristics of the CME until it arrives 1 million miles from Earth and its speed and magnetic intensity are measured by the DSCOVR and ACE satellites. Please visit our webpage for the latest information and updates.” – NOAA

This news was reposted by The NYC Emergency Management X (Twitter) account: “NYC Emergency Management is monitoring a potential severe geomagnetic storm that may impact New York City on October 10-11. Our federal partners from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) have issued a Geomagentic Storm Watch.

“NYC Emergency Management advises New Yorkers to monitor Notify NYC for emergency updates. Sign up for alerts at http://NYC.gov/notifynyc or by calling 311. While the public does not need to take any action at this time, we always encourage everyone to stay informed through Notify NYC and having an emergency plan in place that includes a Go Bag with an AM radio.

“Impacts to critical infrastructure, including GPS, power grids, and communications including inaccuracies or disruptions, are possible.”

NYC Emergency Management should be congratulated for posting this warning about the negative effects of a strong solar storm. It should be noted that any geomagnetic storm strong enough to cause negative effects in NYC could also potentially cause negative effects practically everywhere; other cities and municipalities would be advised to follow suit.
