The late Fr. Bill Stoeger, S. J., who was a cosmologist at the Vatican Observatory, gave this lecture in 2013 shortly before his death. It was part of the Second Oxford Miniseries: Is ‘God’ Explanatory? from the “Philosophy of Cosmology” project, a University of Oxford and Cambridge Collaboration. (Stoeger earned his PhD at Cambridge under Sir Martin Rees, where he was a contemporary of Stephen Hawking.) He goes deeply into the philosophical and scientific meanings of “cause” and how they enrich each other in our study of origins.
