Fr. Boyle next to the VATT. This photo dates from 2012, which was just yesterday, wasn’t it?

Featuring Fr. Rich Boyle, and the latest news of the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope!

Just for our paying members: we’ll be holding our regular on-line meetup where we get to know and chat with each other, and with astronomers from the Vatican Observatory, on the next Full Moon, September 1, a week from when we are posting this.

This month will feature Fr. Rich Boyle SJ, who will talk about his work at the VATT and before the VATT, including how he used to observe with photographic plates on the Schmidt telescope in Rome back in the 1980s… what challenges he faced as the VATT’s first telescope scientist back in the 1990s… what it was like to discover an almost-dwarf-planet in the Kuiper Belt… and how he comes up with the schedules for who gets to use the telescope, and when. (And maybe we’ll talk about his passion for bicycles, as well!)

Fr. Rich and his colleague Fr. Robert Janusz are featured in the Vatican Observatory’s most recent annual report, which you can download here. Take a look there to learn more about the science he does, and how he does it.

What date? Tuesday, September 1: this is Full Moon in Tucson, which occurs late in the evening, Tucson time. (I know, Full Moon is on the 2nd in most of the world; that’s why we have to specify Tucson time.)

What time? As before, these meetups will happen around lunch time in North America: in particular, 10 am Tucson time, which is 1 pm Eastern Daylight Time. (Tucson does not go on daylight time so if this becomes popular enough to continue into the wintertime we may have to adjust this time accordingly.)

[In order to read the rest of this post, you have to be a paid-up member of Sacred Space, either by the month or by the year, and logged in as such!]

Guy J Consolmagno is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

This meeting was created in a non-BAA environment and is not intended for the discussion of healthcare, health education, or health data research.
