Join us August 1st for our next Full Moon-th Meetup where we’ll chat with Dr. Dan M. Davis, a professor emeritus at Stony Brook University, and co-author of Turn Left at Orion – the popular guidebook to the night sky.
Our tradition of hosting online meetups with our Sacred Space Astronomy members and the Vatican Observatory staff, scholars and friends during the Full Moon in Tucson (or thereabout) continues on Tuesday August 1st at 12:00 Noon ET (9:00 AM Tucson time). This meetup is a perk for our Sacred Space Astronomy subscribers- you get to chat with each other, and astronomers and scientists from the Vatican Observatory!
We’ll also have the latest astronomy news and an update about the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope*.

Professor Davis’ research is mostly centered on terrestrial geophysics, from the formation of mountain belts in Pakistan (in his youth he did field work in parts of that country that… well… you just can’t get to anymore) to the formation of glacial moraines and the evolution of sand dunes on Long Island. But on occasion he’s also applied these techniques to the tectonics of other planets and to topics as varied as nuclear test ban monitoring and to calculating the forces driving plate motions.
But what he’s known most for in the astronomical world is his book — with Br. Guy — on how to find interesting items to see in a small telescope: Turn Left at Orion. He will be fresh from a stint at the annual Astronomical League national convention, where he and Br. Guy told stories about their book. And no doubt he’ll be full of new stories from that meeting. Who knows what new ideas or gadgets he will have picked up for his own telescopes, to take advantage of his new retirement home in central Massachusetts?
