Join us on Monday, August 19th for our next Full Moon-th Meetup! Our guest will be Dr. Eiichi Egami, the chair of next year’s Vatican Observatory Summer School!
Dr. Egami is a Research Professor at Steward Observatory, the University of Arizona, where he has been a faculty member since 2001. Originally from Japan, he obtained a PhD in astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (1995), and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Munich (1995-1998) and California Institute of Technology (1998-2001) before joining the University of Arizona.

Our tradition of hosting online meetups with our Sacred Space Astronomy members and the Vatican Observatory staff, scholars and friends during the Full Moon in Tucson (or thereabout) continues on Monday August 19th at 12:00 Noon ET (10:00 AM Tucson time). This meetup is a perk for our Sacred Space Astronomy subscribers- you get to chat with each other, and astronomers and scientists from the Vatican Observatory!
We’ll also have the latest astronomy news and an update about the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope1.
Dr. Egami’s main research area is extragalactic astronomy, studying galaxies near and far, with a special emphasis on observations in the infrared / submillimeter wavelengths. He’s been involved in a series of US-European space missions such as the Infrared Space Observatory, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Herschel Space Observatory. Most recently, he’s been working with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST; launched on the Christmas Day in 2021) as a member of the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument and science team here at the University of Arizona.
In the summer of 1990, Dr. Egami attended the Vatican Observatory Summer School (VOSS 1990) as a graduate student, which was run by Fathers Chris Corbally and the late George Coyne. He still remembers fondly being invited with the other VOSS students that year to the Pope’s residence in Vatican for a private audience with Pope John Paul II. And now Dr. Egami is returning to VOSS next year, as the faculty chair of VOSS 2025 titled “Exploring the Universe with JWST – The First Three Years”.
