Join us on Wednesday, September 18th for our next Full Moon-th Meetup! Our guest will be Dr. Ewine van Dishoeck, Professor of Molecular Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands. She was the recipient of the 2018 Kavli Prize for astrophysics and is a co-editor of the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics (2012–present). She also served as the President of the International Astronomical Union (2018–2021).
Ewine is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (PAS); she and Br. Guy co-chaired a special meeting on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) at the PAS in February. She’s also the head of the JWST program JOYS (JWST Observations of Young protoStars) which aims at characterizing the physical and chemical properties of young high- and low-mass star-forming regions. Our meetup will occur during the middle of a JOYS workshop being held at the Vatican Observatory.

Our tradition of hosting online meetups with our Sacred Space Astronomy members and the Vatican Observatory staff, scholars and friends during the Full Moon in Tucson (or thereabout) continues on Wednesday September 18th at 12:00 Noon ET (10:00 AM Tucson time). This meetup is a perk for our Sacred Space Astronomy subscribers- you get to chat with each other, and astronomers and scientists from the Vatican Observatory!
We’ll also have the latest astronomy news and an update about the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope1.
Professor van Dishoeck is a Dutch astronomer and chemist; she is one of the pioneers of astrochemistry – her research is aimed at determination of the structure of cosmic objects using their molecular spectra.
Her research is on interstellar molecules; physical and chemical evolution during star formation and planet formation, submillimeter and mid-infrared astronomy, basic molecular processes and the radiative transfer of line and continuum radiation.
In 2021 she was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to study chemistry and physics in the planet-forming disks around stars other than the Sun.
Professor van Dishoeck is the most cited molecular astrophysicists in the world.
When? Wednesday, September 18, 2024: Rain or shine
What time? These meetups will happen around lunch time in North America: in particular, 12:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, which is 10:00 AM Tucson time.
