“Divine Cosmos”: Art with a Specola Connection

“Phi” is a painting by Jill Nichols based on the Hubble image of the Eta Carina complex… art imitating nature that looks like art

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the artist Jill Harrington Nichols and seeing a remarkable painting she had produced, called Phi. This is her interpretation of a Hubble image centered on the Eta Carina nebula, painted in oil… on a huge sheet of copper. The effect was striking, indeed overwhelming. We looked into seeing if it could be displayed in the Visitor’s Center in Castel Gandolfo; alas, the cost of shipping this huge and heavy piece of copper was prohibitive. Instead, she arranged for a high resolution print to be made and it now proudly hangs in our art exhibit space.

Painting and the artist

In fact, you can actually purchase a silk scarf of this painting!

But if you want to see the original, now is your chance. She is holding an exhibit called “Divine Cosmos” at the Clare Gallery, 285 Church Street, Hartford, CT, from October 21 to December 9, 2024. And on Sunday, October 27, she’ll give an artist Talk from 12:30 – 1:30 and a Reception from 1:30 – 3:00

Along with “Phi”, she will also have on display the original of another piece, “Juno”, which also hangs in our visitor center. You can visit her web site for more details about her work!
