The second chapter of Matthew tells of “magi from the east” arriving in Jerusalem, seeking “the newborn king of the Jews” because they “saw his star”. Herod had to consult the magi to learn when it appeared, so it was noticeable only to careful observers (customary portrayals of it being brilliant notwithstanding). Recent work at the Vatican Observatory illustrates what we can, and cannot, learn by carefully observing the stars….
