ⓜ Full Moon-th Meetup: 3 July, 2023

Join us July 3rd for our next Full Moon-th Meetup where we’ll chat with Dr. Matthew Pinson SJ, one of the young Jesuits who attended the recent Vatican Observatory Summer School. We’ll discuss the Summer School, Matthew’s time there and what’s next for this globe-trotting Jesuit.

Our tradition of hosting online meetups with our Sacred Space Astronomy members and the Vatican Observatory staff, scholars and friends during the Full Moon in Tucson (or thereabout) continues on Monday July 3rd at 12:00 Noon ET (9:00 AM Tucson time). This meetup is a perk for our Sacred Space Astronomy subscribers- you get to chat with each other, and astronomers and scientists from the Vatican Observatory!

We’ll also have the latest astronomy news and an update about the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope*.

Matthew Pinson, SJ

After undergraduate studies in Australia, Matthew Pinson completed a PhD in physics at MIT between 2009 and 2014. His research focused on modeling the fundamental physical processes behind observed effects in real-world materials, such as lithium-ion batteries and cement paste. The formative importance of the Tech Catholic Community led him to realize he wanted to live a life that prioritized supporting communities of faith seeking to make an impact in the world, and he entered the Australian Province of the Jesuits in 2016.

In addition to his philosophy and theology studies, his life as a Jesuit has taken him to ministries as diverse as leading college students on a walking pilgrimage, working in a hospital pastoral care team, assisting a class for people with intellectual disabilities in Cambodia and driving an ambulance in a remote part of Australia. He is currently studying towards a Master of Divinity at Boston College, in preparation for ordination as a priest. He enjoys watching (and, in his pre-Jesuit days, performing in and writing) musicals, running and cryptic crosswords.
