Abbess St. Hildegard of Bingen OSB (1098-1179), Doctor of the Church

St. Hildegard of Bingen was canonized a saint and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, with reference to her scientific work, among other things.  This article, written by Br. Bob Macke, S. J. (an astronomer at the Vatican Observatory) and posted on the V.O.’s Sacred Space Astronomy/The Catholic Astronomer blog, provides an overview of her life and work.  Macke writes that her scientific work focused on medicine, pharmacology, and plants and animals.
