Fr. George V. Coyne, S. J. writes that the scientific notion of matter as it developed in history cannot be isolated from its philosophical and religious connotations. It is necessary to understand that history and those connotations in order to understand what we might possibly mean today by “materialism”. Fr. Coyne served as Director of the Vatican Observatory from 1978 to 2006.
