This 2005 book on “Catholic belief and the search for extraterrestrial intelligent life” was written by Br. Guy Consolmagno, S.J. and published by The Catholic Truth Society. Br. Guy writes,
I have a hunch … I can’t prove it, I can’t be sure I’m right, indeed I could well be wrong, but still … I have a hunch that, sooner or later, the human race will discover that there are other intelligent creatures out there in the universe.
He adds that part of his reason for that hunch is scientific, part is just a comfortable familiarity with the idea of such life that comes with reading too much science fiction, and part is religious. Consolmagno emphasizes the speculative nature of this subject (repeatedly pointing out that we do not know whether or not such life exists), and covers topics including the nature of knowledge, other intelligences in the Bible, extraterrestrial intelligence and Catholic theology, and “What Does It All Mean?“
